Imagine this: you’re relaxing at home when you start to realize that it’s getting a little warm inside. You’re happy to hear the familiar sound of your air conditioner kicking on and you sit back and wait for your home to cool down… but it doesn’t happen. You walk over to your closest air register and realize there’s no cool air coming from your central air conditioner! So what gives? Today we’re going to talk about some of the possible reasons why your air conditioner would give off warm air and what you should do if you encounter those problems!
Why is no cool air coming from your central air conditioner?
- Thermostat is in the wrong mode. One very simple explanation for your air conditioner blowing warm air is that your thermostat is set to the wrong mode. If somebody mistakenly set your thermostat to “heat” instead of “cool” and your fan is set to “on,” your air handler will be blowing air while your air conditioner is turned off.
- Dirty coils. Your air conditioner blows air over coils to absorb heat from your home’s air and release it outside. If these coils get dirty, they won’t be able to transfer heat effectively and your air conditioner might start to blow warm air. If you have dirty coils, it’s best to have them professionally cleaned by Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical. You can also help avoid this by having annual maintenance performed on your unit!
- Frozen evaporator coil. Similar to dirt buildup on your coils, a frozen evaporator coil will make it difficult for your air conditioner to remove heat from your home’s air. This is another reason why your central air conditioner might blow warm air out of your registers. If you encounter a frozen evaporator coil, turn off your unit and contact Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical so that we can find and fix the problem.
- Refrigerant problems. Refrigerant is what carries heat from inside your home and brings it to your outdoor unit to be released outside. If you have a refrigerant leak, your system won’t have enough refrigerant to remove heat from your home and warm air might come from your air registers. Refrigerant leaks need to be inspected and sealed by Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical, after which we’ll recharge your system with the proper amount.
- Mechanical problems. Mechanical problems such as a malfunctioning condenser or compressor can occur for several reasons and can interrupt the cooling process. These are best diagnosed by a professional, so contact Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical if no cool air is coming from your central air conditioner and you can’t figure out why.
