Earlier this week we blogged about how to choose a thermostat based on specific requirements for your family and your home. Today we wanted to talk about other features that come with various models of thermostats that, although optional, can be very helpful and convenient when it comes to operating your heating and cooling system.

Advanced thermostat features to consider

  • “Smart” technology. “Smart” is a broad term that we’re using to describe thermostats that are connected to the Internet and can be controlled remotely. These types of thermostats allow you to adjust their settings when you’re away from your home, whether it’s via a computer or an app on your phone. Many of these thermostats will also send you alerts if something is wrong with your HVAC system.
  • Touchscreen. Given the ever-growing presence of technology like smartphones and tablets, many people prefer touchscreens over manual buttons and dials. That’s why many advanced thermostats are equipped with intuitive touchscreen displays.
  • Backlights and digital displays. Backlights and digital displays make it easy for you to read your thermostat no matter how dark or light it is in the room. Thermostats with digital displays also typically offer much more information about your HVAC system than standard thermostats.
  • Controls for HVAC accessories. Some thermostats can connect with accessories on your HVAC system such as a whole-house humidifier. This makes it easier to control the comfort levels in your home from a single device.
  • Alerts and reminders. Beyond controlling your home’s comfort levels, some thermostats will also remind you when it’s time to change your filter or alert you when something is wrong with your HVAC system. These can be very helpful features when it comes to maintenance for your furnace and air conditioner.
  • Adaptive recovery. A thermostat with adaptive recovery capabilities can sense upcoming changes in your thermostat settings and begin the heating or cooling process in advance. That means your home’s temperature settings will be ready for you right when you wake up or come home from work.
  • Vacation settings. If you’re going on vacation, you’ll want to override your normal programmable thermostat settings to conserve energy while you’re gone. Thermostats with vacation settings allow you to easily do just that.
