Every day here at Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical, we get calls for all sorts of air conditioner problems. Although some of those problems are unique, many of them are things we encounter all the time. Today we want to go over some of the most common central air conditioner problems so that you have a better understanding of what can go wrong with your cooling system and what Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical can do to take care of it!
5 common central air conditioner problems
- Power cut out. Your air conditioner runs on electricity, so if it’s not receiving power, it won’t turn on. Sometimes the cause of this is a simple trip of your circuit breaker, while other times it could be due to damaged wires or a faulty electrical outlet. If your unit isn’t receiving power, Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical will inspect it, find the source of the problem and replace any necessary damaged parts.
- Clogged air filter. You’d be surprised how many air conditioner problems stem from a clogged air filter: system breakdowns, high energy bills, inadequate cooling, and more. If a clogged filter allowed dirt to build upon your system, we can clean the dirty areas for you. If the filter caused your unit to overheat, we can inspect your unit for damage and make any necessary repairs (along with replacing your system with a fresh filter).
- Refrigerant leak. Your air conditioner cycles the refrigerant it uses, so it should always have the same amount running through it. You should never have to add refrigerant to your air conditioner if it’s working properly. However, if a leak develops in your system, refrigerant can seep out and your air conditioner won’t have enough of it to properly cool your home. If a refrigerant leak occurs, Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical can find and repair the leak and recharge your system with the proper amount of refrigerant.
- Clogged condensate drain. During the cooling process, your air conditioner creates condensation that is normally drained out of your condensate drain. Sometimes that drain can get clogged, which can shut down your unit or cause leaking around your system components. If your condensate drain becomes clogged, we can unclog it for you and ensure that no damage was done to your system.
Evaporator coils frozen over. When your evaporator coils freeze over, your air conditioner won’t be able to properly cool your home. Some of the problems that can cause your coils to freeze are a clogged filter (above), an inadequate amount of refrigerant (below), and dirt buildup on your coils. If your coils freeze over, we’ll make sure to defrost and clean your coils, along with finding and fixing the problem that caused it in the first place.
