In many homes in the St. Louis area, one thermostat controls the temperature of the entire house. This can be problematic when you consider the fact that different parts of your home require different amounts of cooling. Zoned air conditioning allows you to have better control over the temperature levels in every part of your home and solves many of the problems associated with single-thermostat homes.

What is zoned air conditioning?

Zoned air conditioning is a method of cooling your home in which different parts of your house are controlled by separate thermostats. For example, you might have one thermostat controlling the temperatures on your main level while another thermostat controls the temperatures upstairs.

Some homes have just two zones (as in the example above), while other homes have three or more zones to match their specific layout.

4 problems that can be solved with zoned air conditioning

  1. Uneven temperatures. many things can influence the required cooling load of any given part of your home. Heat rises, which often makes upper floors warmer than lower floors. In addition, rooms with a lot of windows will often require more cooling than rooms with less or no windows. Because of this, homes with a single thermostat often have uneven temperatures depending on where you are in the home. Zoned air conditioning allows for much more even temperatures and can provide cooling to parts of your home that you just couldn’t seem to cool before.
  2. High energy bills. Zoned air conditioning allows you to only spend energy on the parts of your home that you use the most. If there’s a part of your home that isn’t used very often, you can put it into its zone and save energy that would otherwise be used to cool it. Many people experience a significant drop in their monthly cooling bills by adding a zoning system.
  3. Airflow problems. Without a zoning system, the only way to avoid cooling a part of your home that doesn’t need it would be to manually close off the registers in that area. However, if you close off too many registers your air conditioner can experience airflow problems. A zoning system allows for proper airflow throughout your home while still having customized temperature settings for different zones.
  4. Arguments over the thermostat. Without a zoning system, one of your home’s bedrooms might be freezing while another one is just too warm. This can lead to arguments over where to set your thermostat, and a zoning system is a perfect way to ease the tension!
