It looks like White-Rodgers, a brand extension of Emerson, has issued a product recall on two models of their programmable thermostats. The malfunction was noticed after a handful of fire hazard-related incidents were discovered to have the same model thermostat as its fault. It looks like the hazard is associated with backup batteries used to power the thermostat’s clock, which is imperative to keeping the thermostat programmable. The batteries are under a constant charge, sometimes causing them to leak, ultimately resulting in a fire hazard.
This recall affects about 180,000 units in the US and 8,300 Canada, but none of those have been installed by Jerry Kelly Heating, Air Conditioning, Electrical and Plumbing. How do you know if your thermostat is one of these? Follow these simple instructions:
Check the Model Numbers printed on the thermostat’s front pull-down panel door
- 1F88-XXX
- 1F85RF-275
Check the Date Codes located inside the removable front cover

- 09
- 1001 – 1039
If your thermostat matches both of these you need to remove the two AA batteries from the thermostat and contact White-Rodgers at (888) 624-1901 between 7 am and 6 pm central time, Monday through Friday.
If you check your thermostat and you don’t find any of the numbers listed above, you will not be affected by the recall and your thermostat will function as it normally would.
