Is My Air Conditioner Harming The Environment?
Short answer? Maybe. It depends on exactly how old your system is, and what kind of refrigerant it uses. For a very, very long time, air conditioning systems used what we call R-22 refrigerant. It worked pretty well at the time, but it turns out R-22 had some super-serious drawbacks.
What is R-22?
R-22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon that was predominantly used in aerosol applications and as a refrigerant for home and vehicle air conditioner systems. You’ll notice we said “was”. Upon further study, R-22 was found to rapidly displace oxygen when in use, presenting risks to both humans, and the overall environment.
For humans and animals, it can cause headaches, and respiratory problems, and can even potentially be fatal. For the environment, it chewed pretty hard into the ozone layer. Which, as we know, is a pretty bad side-effect.
Is R-22 Still in Use?
R-22 is no longer used as an active refrigerant, the new solution being R410A; a similar, but a much safer option. Starting in 2010, all air conditioning equipment was manufactured to only use the new, safer option, and R-22 is currently being entirely phased out of production.
Should I Replace My Current System?
If your system still depends on R-22 refrigerant, absolutely. If not right away, it’s a good idea to do so soon. As R-22 gets phased out, it will become exceptionally scarce, and the cost to repair a system that uses it will skyrocket. The United States, Japan, and other countries that host HVAC manufacturing are all currently making the change to R410A, and eventually, R-22 will be gone.
