Carbon Monoxide Detector Features: What to Look for in a New Unit

To keep your home safe, especially during the heating season, you must have carbon monoxide detectors installed in all of the right places in your home. When it comes time to replace an old CO detector, you’ll quickly find out that there are many different options to choose from. Today we’re going to help you find the right unit for your home by talking about what features to look for in a new carbon monoxide detector!

Carbon monoxide detector features: What to look for in a new unit

  • Low-level CO detection. The CO detectors that are available at stores only sound an alarm when carbon monoxide levels are dangerously high. They do not, however, warn you when low levels of carbon monoxide are present in your home for an extended period. A low-level carbon monoxide detector will provide your home with the maximum amount of protection and will warn you early when CO is building up in your home’s air, giving you ample time to take care of the problem.
  • Reliable sensor. Different CO detectors use different types of sensors, and some are more reliable than others. A detector that uses an electrochemical sensor can provide accurate readings at all times in your home, even when temperature and humidity levels change (which can produce inaccurate readings in detectors that use other types of sensors).
  • Backup power source. You should look for a carbon monoxide detector that can run on batteries as a backup power source if the power goes out in your home.
  • “End of life” warning. Although this is a feature that’s included with most new CO detectors, older units might not give an “end of life” warning. This is an important feature because your detector will let you know when it’s time for a replacement.
  • Digital and backlit display. Just like programmable thermostats, it’s nice to have a digital display and backlit lighting on your carbon monoxide detector so that you can always easily view its readings.
