When you think about all of the major problems that you can encounter in your home, there’s almost nothing as bad as your furnace going out. It gets bitterly cold in the St. Louis area during winter, and your home can quickly turn into an igloo without heat. Today we’re going to talk about what to do when there is no heat in your house so you can be prepared if it ever happens to you!
Check for simple problems first
The first thing you’ll want to do if you have no heat in your house is to check for simple problems. Your thermostat is a good place to start because it is responsible for telling your furnace when to turn on and off.
First, check to make sure that your thermostat is in the “heat” mode instead of the “cool” mode and that the temperature setting is not lower than the actual temperature of your home. Also, some thermostats will give warning signs when something is wrong with your furnace, so be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary.
If you have an older furnace with a pilot light, make sure that the flame did not go out. If it did, relight the pilot light and see if your furnace turns back on. Also, check your circuit breaker to ensure that your furnace is receiving power.

How to stay warm when there is no heat in your house
While you’re waiting for one of our technicians to arrive, here are some tips for staying warm in your home when your furnace is out:
- Make sure all of your doors and windows are tightly shut and shove towels at the bottoms of doors that do not have proper weatherstripping
- Dress warmly, cover yourself with blankets, and consider wearing hats and gloves if it’s too cold
- Use a space heater (but don’t leave it unattended)
- Light a fire in your fireplace
