HVAC technicians are who you work with if you’ve ever called a heating and cooling company to come to fix your broken air conditioner. Typically, the heating and cooling company dispatches the technician to service calls to fill his or her day. The employment outlook
Right now, there’s a healthy demand for trade jobs, and HVAC is no exception. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the demand for qualified HVAC technicians will grow by 15 percent through the year 2026 – which is much faster than the average of other jobs.

Choosing HVAC as an occupation requires taking into account several considerations. These include:
Training
Just like any area of specialty work, you need training and licensing to work as an HVAC technician. Some businesses may have apprenticeships, but most technicians need to get specialized training because there’s a vast array of equipment associated with heating, cooling and ventilation, such as:
- Technology-driven energy efficient furnaces
- Heat pumps with various designs and processes
- Central air conditioners
- Dehumidifiers
- Air handlers/purifiers
Learning about all these different systems takes time, but usually, an investment of about two years will qualify you to work on this type of equipment. And on the upside, you won’t have the expense of a four- (or even two-) year degree with all those accompanying student loans.

Income potential
Recently the BLS reported a median income for HVAC professionals at approximately $47,000 per year. Often HVAC technicians make more, especially during times of extreme temperatures. While evening and/or weekend hours may be a part of the job, those shifts often pay overtime wages.
