No matter what time of the year it is, a dirty air filter can cause major problems with your heating and cooling system. One of the top reasons we visit homes for furnace and air conditioner repairs is because a system has been running with a clogged filter. We want to stress the importance of changing your filter during the upcoming winter months, so today we’re going to talk about some of the most common furnace problems that can develop if you run your system with a dirty filter!
Furnace problems caused by a dirty filter
Cold house. When you have a clogged filter, your furnace will not be able to push an adequate amount of air past the filter. This means that there will be less warm air being distributed throughout your home, which will make it very difficult to keep your home warm.
High heating bills. Heating bills can get pretty high during the winter months, and adding any extra stress to your furnace will raise them that much higher. Because your furnace’s blower has to work a lot harder and longer when your filter is clogged, your system will consume much more energy than it would if it were running with a clean filter.
Furnace breakdowns. Another problem with overworking your furnace is that parts can overheat and cause your system to break down. Since your furnace works the hardest when it’s cold outside, breakdowns typically happen when it’s freezing and you need your furnace the most. Don’t be left in the cold – check or change your filter every month!
When your filter is clogged, it will not be able to effectively remove dirt and other particles from the air that’s cycled through your furnace. This can allow dirt to build upon your furnace’s burners, which can be a safety hazard and cause your system to operate inefficiently.
Cracked heat exchangers. One of the biggest problems with running your furnace with a dirty filter is that it can cause your heat exchanger to crack. Your furnace heats air by blowing it over a heat exchanger. If your filter is clogged, there won’t be enough air to blow over the heat exchanger, so extra heat will build up inside the exchanger itself. The stress that this overheating puts on your heat exchanger can cause it to crack. Your heat exchanger can also crack over time due to repeated expanding and contracting during every heating cycle. When your heat exchanger is cracked, it has the potential of allowing carbon monoxide to leak into your home’s air.

Jerry Kelly was able to get a tech out on a Saturday morning well before the appointment. Jerry A. was friendly, happy to explain everything he was doing and went above and beyond in every way possible. He even took a moment to accept the toy our dog brought to him and give him some pets and love. Anyone who needs HVAC service or repair should call them. Don't try to save a buck and have a friend of a friend patch things only for them to break shortly after. Call the people who know what they're doing!! Thanks again Jerry A.
Graham Blackhurst saved me in a pinch on Memorial Day weekend and made me and wife incredibly happy. Professional, informative, comprehensive, and honest. Truly appreciate all his hard work will use again.
Jerry A. Was absolutely amazing! He was incredibly pleasant and very informative! He set me up with a membership and a ton of knowledge about my ac. Did I mention that i put in an appointment request online on the Sunday before Memorial Day and he was here same day, just hours after the request was sent? I could not be happier with my experience today! Five stars do no justice!
Follow on business and Dalton did a great job with my ac tune up.I never go out of my way to fill our a survey or recommend anything it is not in my nature but I feel I have to let everyone know how great Tammy (dispatch) and John your tech did an excellent job.I have never called an AC repair person ever so needless to say I was hesitant and nervous especially about being ripped off. That being said Tammy explained the pricing for everything and it was simple so I proceeded. John came our 30 minutes from within me calling at 7 pm and was wrapped up about 9 pm.John answered all my questions even though I may have bugged him so I was comfortable with what he was doing. I will definitely be a return customer for our heater and servicing that in the fall.
Jerry Ayyad just came by my house to service my furnace and AC units. Very friendly, polite, and professional.Would definitely recommend using Jerry Kelly’s services especially if all of the technicians are as great as Jerry A!

Graham and Tyler came out today to service our AC and Furnace. They did a wonderful job today. Their first job ran a little late but they called ahead of time to let me know and make sure that it wouldn't be an issue. Tyler was in training and so the visit took a little longer than what I'm used to but I'd rather they be thorough and not miss anything than rush. Both gentlemen were very courteous and polite. I couldn't have asked for better service.
Dalton did a great job tuning up our A/C and gas furnace, including replacing a failed part in the A/C compressor and increasing gas pressure in the furnace, which should make both run more efficiently. Diagnosed issues in the humidifier and UV irradiation light for the A/C, which we will consider getting repaired.

Zach displayed unwavering determination as he tackled the problem head-on, ultimately hitting a home run for Team Kelly. As long-time customers of Jerry Kelly, we have already purchased two complete systems from them. Their commitment to standing behind their work and ensuring customer satisfaction is truly commendable. Zach exemplifies the high standards upheld by the entire Jerry Kelly team. The service to repair my ac unit was professional and I received a call the next day after diagnosis of the problem. The service tech mike was knowledgeable and did a great job in repairing my ac unit.
Technician arrived at my house early, diagnosed the problems, took measurements which was sent to a fabrication team for making my new ducts and plenum, and had a crew headed out to my house the same day for a furnace, a-coil and condensing unit install. The technician left my house after noon and said that they normally don't start big installs like that after noon, but he was adamant that the crew would be there to perform the work and it would take 6 to 8 hours. The crew showed up around 1:30pm and left my house around 6:45. So it basically only took them 5 hours to do the full install. Plus, I have a finished basement so they had to work in some tight spaces. However, they would have been done sooner, but they had trouble with their diagnostic testing equipment syncing up at the end of the install. They stayed until the diagnostic equipment synced up so they could run their rest. I'm not sure how those guys are compensated from Jerry Kelly, but they deserve a bonus for the work they performed. I highly recommend this service.
