No matter what time of the year it is, a dirty air filter can cause major problems with your heating and cooling system. One of the top reasons we visit homes for furnace and air conditioner repairs is because a system has been running with a clogged filter. We want to stress the importance of changing your filter during the upcoming winter months, so today we’re going to talk about some of the most common furnace problems that can develop if you run your system with a dirty filter!
Furnace problems caused by a dirty filter
Cold house. When you have a clogged filter, your furnace will not be able to push an adequate amount of air past the filter. This means that there will be less warm air being distributed throughout your home, which will make it very difficult to keep your home warm.
High heating bills. Heating bills can get pretty high during the winter months, and adding any extra stress to your furnace will raise them that much higher. Because your furnace’s blower has to work a lot harder and longer when your filter is clogged, your system will consume much more energy than it would if it were running with a clean filter.
Furnace breakdowns. Another problem with overworking your furnace is that parts can overheat and cause your system to break down. Since your furnace works the hardest when it’s cold outside, breakdowns typically happen when it’s freezing and you need your furnace the most. Don’t be left in the cold – check or change your filter every month!
When your filter is clogged, it will not be able to effectively remove dirt and other particles from the air that’s cycled through your furnace. This can allow dirt to build upon your furnace’s burners, which can be a safety hazard and cause your system to operate inefficiently.
Cracked heat exchangers. One of the biggest problems with running your furnace with a dirty filter is that it can cause your heat exchanger to crack. Your furnace heats air by blowing it over a heat exchanger. If your filter is clogged, there won’t be enough air to blow over the heat exchanger, so extra heat will build up inside the exchanger itself. The stress that this overheating puts on your heat exchanger can cause it to crack. Your heat exchanger can also crack over time due to repeated expanding and contracting during every heating cycle. When your heat exchanger is cracked, it has the potential of allowing carbon monoxide to leak into your home’s air.

Dalton did a great job on his visit today. My husband asked him a question about a cost on a item. He called his manager and was able to give us a discount. We have been with Jerry Kelly for years and their representatives and company have always done a great job for us. We highly recommend them.
Justin was very thorough and explained the problems I’m having with my unit so I understand the problems and can make informed decisions given my options. He also was at the house within just a few hours of me calling for an appointment so I appreciate the timeliness of service.
My tech was Mike C. He was excellent and very knowledgeable. There had been some concerns on my end about carbon monoxide leaking and after a very thorough look over the gas furnace and gas water heater, all the readings came back normal and was a relief! Mike was very friendly and professional and I would happily have him back when I schedule my ac tune up in the near future!
Went to an older family member's house when she was having furnace issues. They tried to upsell everything, resulting in a quote that was 7000-8000 more than other quotes (and 5k higher than next closest quote). They also failed to turn on the backup heating system while there.

Bret Berry is an excellent technician. He serviced my furnace and humidifier. He was thorough and took time to answer questions from my teenage boys about his career. I highly recommend Jerry Kelly and Bret.
Alex Larson showed up, on time, friendly and did an excellent job explaining the problem to me. Offered a few opttions, what the costs would be, and then he got busy making my furnace run! Even on the most frigid of days!
I HIGHLY recommend you use Jerry Kelly for your heating and cooling needs. We had our furnace installed a year and a half ago, by another company. In the last month, our furnace has went out 3 times. The first 2 times, we had the company that installed the furnace come out to repair it. We paid two $99 service fees, because the first time they didn’t take enough diagnostics to find the root of the problem. The second time they came out, they told us we needed a $900 A-Coil cleaning and our air ducts to be cleaned. Thank goodness we went to Jerry Kelly, because all along it was a wiring issue due to the furnace being installed poorly. 4 hours worth of rewiring at a cost of $300 with a waved service fee, and we’re successfully up and running. Jerry Kelly stated that yes, there is debris on the A-coil and yes, we should get our ducts cleaned (although not an urgent matter) but that is absolutely not the issue. After contacting the company that installed our furnace, we were given a whole $99 back out of our $6000 we’ve spent with them since the day of the installation of our new service. May I add that the same day the initial company installed our furnace, our hot water heater went out. Ironic? We were told that this was not linked to the furnace installation and that they were not liable. We obviously had the water heater replaced by another company that took great care of us. Moral of the story is use Jerry Kelly in order to save yourself from another company that only wants your money.
Bret and Greg did an amazing job. From start to finish they explained everything and conducted themselves in a very professional manner - completed the work to my satisfaction . Excellent 5 stars . Thank you.
Update: Spoke to a manager and they tried to right their wrong by refunding my service fee. Disappointed in how this happened but very appreciative of this correctionQuoted us $12,000 for a new system. That includes a $2,000 “courtesy”. Got a second option and we just needed a wire replaced. Ended up costing $160 (a service fee). What an absolute scam. If you’re young/first time homeowner, they will try to take advantage of you.
